Grace Burnham是纽约的一名医生，1890年代，她去到哥伦比亚一处偏僻的种植园，试着治疗一个精神有问题的男孩。这个孩子看似有着无法解释的能力，或许杀死了自己的母亲。而Burnham的介入引起了村子里宗教人士的反对，他们认为男孩是被邪灵附体，是当地遭受的痛苦、麻烦的根源。在那个宗教狂热盛行、精神医学被当做戏法的年代，当地人完全看不起一个携科学知识前来的外地女性。
A doctor from New York (Amber Heard) travels to a remote plantation in the 1890s to care for a disturbed boy who seems to have m.yakubd.net inexplicable abilities. She begins treating the child, but in doing so ignites a war of science versus religion with the local priest who believes the boy is possessed by the Devil and is the reason for all the village's woes.
